For plain English prose, 1,000 words is often roughly in the range of 1,300 to 1,700 tokens. That is a useful planning shortcut when you are estimating prompt size, budgeting API cost, or checking whether a workflow is likely to fit comfortably inside a context window.
It is only a rule of thumb, not a billing-grade number. The exact token count depends on the model family, the tokenizer, and the shape of the text itself. Clean paragraphs, lists, code, tables, and messy transcripts do not compress the same way.

Tokens are not the same thing as words. Some words break into one token, others into several pieces. Numbers, punctuation, code snippets, markup, and unusual formatting can all push the count up. That is why two documents with the same word count may produce noticeably different token totals.
This is especially important for product teams working with transcripts, support logs, or documents pulled from PDFs. Those sources often contain formatting noise that makes the token count less efficient than a clean draft written for humans.

For product work, the more useful question is usually how many tokens are in one real request. A 1,000-word article is a helpful reference point, but what drives cost is the full request payload: system prompt, user message, retrieved context, tool traces, and model output.
So use the 1,000-word estimate as a sanity check, not as the whole model. It helps you think in the right order, but real workload math should always come back to actual requests.
